Professor Wole Soyinka has declared that President Olusegun Obasanjo is a spectacular disgrace to the Yoruba people, who could not afford to be indifferent because Obasanjo was their own. Speaking in Yoruba, he remarked that the Yorubas could not look the other way while their son was behaving in a manner that could tarnish the reputation and cherished image of the race.
The Nobel Laurete described President Olusegun Obasanjo as a piece of bone in the throats of Nigerians that must be spat out at all costs.
Soyinka who made this submission as chairman in his key note address at the All Yoruba Youth Conference, (AYYC) held in Lagos also described the third term project as a taboo and abomination which must also be resisted vehemently.
Speaking further, the renown activist said that Yoruba were known for their forthrightness, selflessness and consideration for the generation yet unborn, adding that they are known for charting a progressive course that future generations could follow to attain economic stability and political progress.
While condemning the sit tight project of Obasanjo, Soyinka said the problem Nigerian was that of leadership and self centredness, vowing that Nigerians would not allow them to spoil this country.
He assured the conference that when the time for pouring into the streets to protest bad governance and third term was rife, no police could prevent them, saying that “peaceful protest within our father land was an inalienable right of the citizenry.”
The renown professor was later honoured with Oduduwa Millenium Award 2006.
Speaking earlier, the chairman of the Central Working Committee of the Oodua Self-Determination Groups, (COSEG) Mr. Dayo Ogunlana explained that the theme of the conference, “Democracy and the Nationality Question in Nigeria” was very relevant in the present circumstance in the country
